چکیده

Palm sized legged robots show promise for military and civilian applications, including exploration of hazardous or difficult to reach places, search and rescue, espionage, and battlefield reconnaissance. However, they also face many technical obstacles, includingbut not limited toactuator performance, weight constraints, processing power, and power density. This paper presents an overview of several robots from the Biomimetic Millisystems Laboratory at UC Berkeley, including the OctoRoACH, a steerable, running legged robot capable of basic navigation and equipped with a camera and active tail; CLASH, a dynamic climbing robot; and BOLT, a hybrid crawling and flying robot. The paper also discusses, and presents some preliminary solutions to, the technical obstacles listed above plus issues such as robustness to unstructured environments, limited sensing and communication bandwidths, and system integration.

Co-evolution of Morphology, Control and Behavior Master project

Currently, the maneuverability of robots is obtained by human design and is specific to each robot. There are no generic ways of designing robots with maneuverability skills. In this paper we investigate the use of co-evolution of body and mind in virtual robots to optimize maneuverability. Robots were successfully evolved to respond to steering commands and speed commands. It has been demonstr...

Additional Stability for Single-Unit Pattern Generators

Legged robots have the potential to travel where wheeled robots cannot. While legged robots have many advantages that improve their maneuverability, they are notoriously difficult to control. However, neuroevolution, which combines the nature-inspired fields of neural networks with evolutionary computation, has shown promise in this task. The aim of this paper is to extend prior work that intro...

Mobile Platform with Leg-Wheel Mechanism for Practical Use

Robots that can move over rough terrain with active body leveling are now in strong demand. Such a robot can have a variety of uses, such as carrying packages, assisting people who have difficulty in walking, and safety monitoring outdoors. Many robots capable of moving over rough terrain exist as research tools; however, few are suitable for practical use. These robots can be generally classif...

Stiffness control of a legged robot equipped with a serial manipulator in stance phase

The ability to perform different tasks by a serial manipulator mounted on legged robots, increases the capabilities of the robot. The position/force control problem of such a robot in the stance phase with point contacts on the ground is investigated here. A target plane with known stiffness is specified in the workspace. Active joints of the legs and serial manipulator are used to exert the de...

Design and Simulation of Legged Walking Robots in MATLAB Environment

It is well known that legged locomotion is more efficient, speedy, and versatile than the one by track and wheeled vehicles when it operates in a rough terrain or in unconstructed environment. The potential advantages of legged locomotion can be indicated such as better mobility, obstacles overcoming ability, active suspension, energy efficiency, and achievable speed (Song & Waldron, 1989). Legg...
